MCLENNAN COUNTY HISTORY

McLennan County was created by the Texas Legislature in 1850 out of Milam County, and is named for Neil McLennan, an early settler . The county seat, Waco, had been founded originally as an outpost of the Texas Rangers, laid out by George Erath, and was known by 1850 as “Waco Village.”

According to local lore, the first sustained flight did not occur in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, but just outside Tokio, a small community in McLennan County, by a man flying a gyrocopter.

The 1892 Victoria County Courthouse now stands on the government block. The Plaza del Mercado, or Market Square, was the heart of De Leon’s town. The de Leon family members built their homes around market square. Main Street, which links the two squares, was originally designated Calle de Los Diez Amigos, or The Street of Ten Friends. The largest single gathering of Texian troops during the Revolution occurred at Camp Victoria, on the banks of Spring Creek just north of the city. 2,500 troops encamped here between May 31, 1836 and September of that same year. Stephen F. Austin visited Camp Victoria during September, campaigning for president of the new republic. Victoria was among the original twenty-three counties established by the First Congress of the Republic of Texas on March 17, 1836. Its modern boundaries were defined by the Texas legislature on March 31, 1846. The City of Victoria was chartered in 1839.

The jurisdiction of the Southern District of Texas is divided as follows:

The Victoria Division covers Calhoun, DeWitt, Goliad, Jackson, Lavaca, Refugio, and Victoria Counties.

Bexar ( pronounced “Bear”) County was originally home to over 125 small independent Native American tribes  known collectively as the Coahuiltechans.

European visitors arrived as early as the 1520s, but on June 13, 1691, a formal Spanish expedition reached a waterway in the southern part of present-day Bexar County.

As this day was the Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua, the priest Damien Massanet, who was traveling with the expedition, named the river “San Antonio.”

Along the San Antonio River, the Franciscans established five Missions that would become the foundation of the City of San Antonio and Bexar County.

The Honorable Susan D. Reed Reed is the first woman to be elected District Attorney of Bexar County. Prior to her election in November of 1998, she served as Judge of the 144th District Court for 12 years.
District Attorney Reed was raised in San Antonio, Texas. She graduated from Alamo Heights High School. Her undergraduate degree is from the University of Texas at Austin majoring in Economics. She was awarded the Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Texas School of Law in 1974.
In addition to being licensed to practice law in Texas, she is licensed in Federal court in the Western District of Texas and the United States Supreme Court. She is board certified in Criminal Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.

Visitation Rules and Regulations

BEXAR COUNTY JAIL Visitation Days and Times

Changes to the inmate visitation schedule have been made to expand adult evening and weekend visitation hours.  Numbered tickets will be issued from 11:30 A.M. until 7:30 P.M.  Visitation will begin at 12:00 P.M. and end at 8:00 P.M. or until the last visitor has been seen.

All Visitors with passes issued by 7:30 P.M. will be allowed to complete the visit.

All inmates will be allowed two (2) twenty minute visits per week.

Out-of-town visitors residing outside a 150 mile distance from San Antonio will receive a 30 minute visit, with verification of residency on their Identification, on scheduled visitation days.

A – L – Saturday 07:00 AM to 2:00 PM Adults and children shall be permitted to visit.  Adults need not bring a child in order to obtain a visit.

A conservative dress code is enforced at all times:  Visitors will not be permitted to visit in revealing (bust, belly or underwear) clothing.  This includes no sleeveless tops or dresses, tank tops, spaghetti straps, or “see through” attire.  No skirts, dresses or shorts more than 6″ measured from the bottom of the knee (must be walking length shorts).

A visitor must be on the inmates visitation list with the exception of immediate family members during the first five days of incarceration.  During the first five days of incarceration family members may visit on any designated visitation day during normal visitation hours.  No exceptions after the fifth day of incarceration.  All visitors to include Out-of-Town visitors must be listed on the inmates visitation list.
